Globalization and ethnic diversity are the next frontiers in sports fan development, especially for the three major US sports, each of which has reached some level of saturation in the primary target markets. The NFL, NBA, and MLB have all taken to hosting games overseas, opened player development facilities outside the country (be it minor league or youth), and have seen an increase in foreign born players. It’s probably safe to say internationalization and diversity are in the top three business initiatives for each sport.

The incident in which an African American professor from Harvard was arrested by a Boston police officer has been all over the news recently. It seems like political comedians like John Stuart and Colbert have been making jokes about it for at least three days. So by now, almost all US citizens must be familiar with the incident. The event involves two issues: race and race profiling, and the use of the power to arrest citizens by police officers.

Many years ago, a holiday consisted of visiting relatives or, if you were really lucky, a family visit to the sea-side. Then came the rise of the ‘package holiday’. For the first time, people were able to visit comparatively far-away places; to see different countries and to experience different cultures first-hand.
