Senior strategist Dirk van Dijk, CFA has issued notes on this morning’s GDP numbers. These notes will be published in two separate blogs — Growth Rates and Contributions to Growth. The recession is over! In the third quarter, GDP grew by 3.5%, comfortably ahead of expectations for 3.0% growth. Nevermind that profits have been skyrocketing since 2005, and that it’s enjoying yet another year of record profits. Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures, had a few choice words in an op-ed published on the Times Online recently that discussed piracy and its effect on the movie industry, but what he says just doesn’t add up. Firstly, he says that one of the reasons why he decided to release the upcoming film Michael Jackson’s This Is It to “almost everywhere in the world tomorrow” is because otherwise CAM copies would be freely available to those where it was not, presumably implying that they diminish ticket sales.

I can’t say much for this franchise as I think it’s premise is about as disgusting and unnecessary as they come, though with six film’s in the franchise I’m aware that I am in the minority.

Pick a local business; any one — about 80 folks involved with them protested the approval of ATI taking 10,000 square feet of prime retail space at reduced rental rates any one of them would gladly pay.  Many of those local businesses are owned by people who live here.  They bank here, sometimes locally.  They buy groceries, and dine out, and have a beer or glass of wine here.  They attend local events.  They belong to local business groups that promote local business.  The rent they pay sometimes goes to landlords who live here, who in turn do the same things the other business owners do.

His top priority - “global warming,” which of course comes along with a raft of legislative and regulatory burdens and taxes. The Middle East Is Not So Rich The number of millionaires in the United Arab Emirates fell by approximately 10,000 during 2008, according to a report from Merrill Lynch. On Wednesday, a federal judge rejected a series of arguments by lawyers for the mercenary firm formerly known as Blackwater seeking to dismiss five high-stakes war crimes cases brought by Iraqi victims against both the company and its owner, Erik Prince. Geely Holding Group Co’s 10-month effort to buy Volvo from Ford Motor Co may fall apart within days as the companies struggle to agree on intellectual property rights, two people familiar with the talks said. Geely and Ford officials are meeting in London this week to try to resolve the US automaker’s concerns about sharing technology and future product plans, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private.

ISLAMABAD: The membership drive launched by the Federal Government Housing Foundation (FGEHF) of the Ministry of Housing to provide housing units under government’s launched schemes continues successfully. Under the scheme,every registered employee would get an opportunity to have a house in the Federal Capital. Ministry of Housing and Works Secretary Ahmed Bux Lehri said under the scheme the registered employees would be able to get houses, apartments or flats of their own choices on ‘first come, first served basis’.

Whilst property values in the USA, UK and many western European countries have fallen significantly during the global financial crisis – Australian property values have held up relatively well. In fact median house prices in some Australian markets have actually increased during 2009. It is interesting to note that Australian property prices experienced some ‘correction’ whilst prices in other western countries continued to climb precipitously in the lead-up to the Global Financial Crisis.

The contribution made by CDNS is quite significant in the wake of tough economic conditions as the International Monetary Fund restricted the government from borrowing from the central bank.
